Inside Our Spanish Immersion Classrooms

At Montessori Children's House, our Spanish Immersion (SI) classrooms blend the Montessori philosophy with rich language experiences. Classrooms are led by two teachers—one who speaks English, and one who speaks Spanish. Children decide which teacher to approach for lessons and naturally absorb both languages throughout their day.

With a mix of English-first and Spanish-first language families, children gain real-world language exposure that feels effortless and fun. Through songs, stories, daily conversations, and hands-on learning activities, language learning happens organically. Whether a child is helping prepare a snack, exploring science materials, or working on math concepts, Spanish becomes a natural part of their daily routine.

The Importance of Early Exposure to a Second Language

Dr. Montessori taught that from birth to age six, children experience a "sensitive period" for language. During this time, young minds are uniquely receptive to absorbing new languages. In our SI classrooms, language isn’t taught through flashcards or drills—it’s a natural part of the environment.

Early exposure to a second language encourages:

  • Empathy and cultural awareness

  • Curiosity about the world

  • Open-mindedness and social confidence

Dr. Montessori believed that understanding different cultures is key to building a peaceful future, and language learning is an important part of that journey.

How Language Learning Fits Naturally in the Montessori Classroom

Montessori classrooms are led by the child—and language learning is no different. Children choose which teacher to work with and when they’re ready to explore language. Spanish becomes just another thread in the fabric of their day, alongside art, music, and practical life activities.

In our SI classrooms, children move seamlessly between languages, using Spanish to complete everyday tasks and English when they choose. This natural exposure leads to confident bilingual speakers who are curious and comfortable in multicultural environments.

Outcomes of Our Spanish Immersion Program

Children who participate in our Spanish Immersion program leave with:

  • Confidence in both languages

  • Curiosity and a love for learning

  • Empathy for others and cultural understanding

While every child’s experience is unique, all leave with a strong understanding of both languages and the confidence to use them. Many families continue their child’s language journey with other immersion programs in the area, building on the solid foundation they gained at MCH.

Beyond language proficiency, children develop problem-solving skills, empathy, and global awareness. These experiences prepare them for success in a global society and instill a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.
